Project description

Electrification systems based on the use of renewable energy sources have proved adequate to provide electricity to isolated communities autonomously and also produce electricity in a sustainable and respectful way with the environment. Nowadays, models and design tools in the literature to design these systems do not consider some of its features and/or key constraints. In the previous project ENE2010 - 15509 (Rural Electrification with Solar and Wind Energy) some of these issues were addressed, and models to design wind and/or solar systems were developed, considering local microgrids. As a continuation and expansion of this project, and to increase its applicability, the overall objective of this proposal, OSEERyM, is to optimize the design of autonomous rural electrification systems based on the use of wind, solar and also microhydro energy and bioenergy, with distribuction grids at a regional scale. In addition, a management system will be design to be in charge of the operation, mantainance and technical and economical sustainability of the project. In particular, the specific objectives, within the general objective are:

  • SO1. To go in depth study of cases and experiences of electrification and in the review and analysis of the scientific literature as a starting point the SO2
  • SO2. To define and to formalize aspects of the problem of study not previously considered, among others (pending the results of SO1):
  1. To incorporate electricity generation by microhydro energy and bioenergy
  2. To consider distribution microgrids in a regional scale
  3. Design a system management (Operation and Maintenance) to assure the technical and economic sustainability including the technical options of previous points 1 and 2.
  • SO3. To develop optimization models and resolution procedures based on exact techniques and mixed integer linear programming (MILP). To validate them with real cases.
  • SO4. To design and to develop heuristic procedures for resolution instances which, due to its size, cannot be solved exactly in an acceptable time using mathematical programming. To validate them with real cases.
  • SO5. To design a multicriteria methodology multicriterio to select the best design and system management taken into account tecnical, economic, social and environmental criteria.
  • SO6. To disseminate and to apply the results to the design of real electrification projects.

In short, the objective is to obtain models and multicriteria tools for the design of systems for isolated electrification with renewable energy, considering the conditions and characteristics of the promoter institutions and future users, thus ensuring that the obtained solutions are efficient and sustainable over time.
